Common Causes

Saxophone octave key issues are well-nigh usually caused by how the saxophone neck is handled when assembling the musical instrument.  The octave key stretches over the top of the saxophone neck, and information technology tin easily exist bent out of shape if you squeeze the neck too difficult. This is going to cause the octave fundamental not to work properly. Octave cardinal issues are a particularly common problem on newer Chinese saxophones .

Discover the lifter under the "U" curve of your cervix octave mechanism

Identify the problem

Find the small pad on top of your neck, but down from where your mouthpiece cork ends. That is your cervix octave mechanism. Follow it down to where it goes around the neck in a "U" shape. Underneath you'll see a lifter key coming upwardly from the body. That lifter key should not be touching the neck octave mechanism if everything is setup correctly.

If yours is touching, don't worry. I'll get to how you set this in a minute.

How the lifter works

The key lifter has basically got two dissimilar functions. Firstly, with no keys pressed, the lifter should sit down behind the octave key merely non touching it. As you press down just the octave fundamental with your correct pollex, the lifter should firstly move virtually a millimeter to affect the neck octave mechanism. And so as you continue to printing the octave key, the lifter should motion further and elevator the cervix octave machinery so it is clear of the pad on the top of your neck that we first identified.

Pressing your octave key should open your neck octave fundamental machinery.

The 2d function works if you press your Thou likewise as your octave cardinal. At present the lifter should return to the sax'southward body, allowing the neck octave mechanism to lower and shut the octave pad.

With these two keys still pressed y'all should be able to easily movement the lifter back and forth. This shows united states of america that the neck octave mechanism is fully airtight and sealing the pad on top of your neck.

How to fix information technology

Suppose your lifter isn't working like this, then it's relatively easy to gear up. We need to bend the neck octave key machinery, so it is in the right shape. Don't panic – this is like shooting fish in a barrel to do, and if y'all're careful, you won't do whatever lasting damage to your instrument!

Squeeze gently to shut downward the neck octave cardinal .

Put both of your thumbs under the "U" bend on the neck octave mechanism and your commencement 2 fingers on the top of it up almost the neck pad. Gently squeeze the cervix octave mechanism to slightly make it less of a "C" shape. Always just brand a small change and so check your lifter again to run into if the problem has been corrected.

Gone also far? Don't worry.

Y'all can open out the "C" shape of the neck octave mechanism by placing i thumb under the elevation of the cervix octave mechanism near the neck pad, and the other thumb on the "U" bend. Gently button your two thumbs apart to open out the "C" shape of the neck octave mechanism.

Use your thumbs to gently open the octave key up.

In one case yous practise this a few times you lot will find it actually like shooting fish in a barrel and quick to do.
